How to apply mascara: beauty tutorial
Before applying it, you’ll want to give your lashes a ‘more curved’ shape: use an eyelash curler to help you.
When using the wand, the most common mistake that we tend to make is to push it into the tube before pulling it out to coat the brush with product. The most effective technique, instead, is to slowly rotate the wand, so that it picks up just the right amount of pigment and product.
Stand or sit in front of the mirror and start by applying the mascara in a zig-zag motion, starting from the base of the lashes and working upwards towards the tips.
It is up to you how many coats you want to apply: the end result (longer-looking lashes or longer-looking volumized lashes) will depend on the number of times that you repeat this step. Avoid exaggerating though! Too many coats can weigh down your make-up and cause clumps - you’ll already know that with our mascaras it takes just a few coats to achieve an outstanding result!
After applying mascara to the upper lashes, enhance your lower lashes using the same technique, but this time with a lighter touch, considering that the lower lashes are usually shorter and sparser.
The best way to apply mascara for longer-looking lashes
To apply your mascara, look up, place the brush at the base of your upper lashes, and wiggle it back and forth, coating the base of your lashes.
Then pull the wand upward towards the tip of your eyelashes, making sure you're coating every part of your lashes as you pull through and moving slowly to avoid clumping.
The best way to apply mascara for more voluminous lashes
This helps widen the appearance of the eyes by fanning the lashes. When you're working on the shorter, more sparse lashes on your inner eyes, hold the mascara wand vertically using the top tip for more precise application.
And never forget your bottom lashes! Just like you held the wand vertically and used the very tip of the applicator to apply mascara to those shorter lashes on your inner eyes, use the same technique when applying mascara to your bottom lashes.
How to apply mascara without clumping and smudging
One very important tip is, no matter which formula you choose, just to be sure to wipe the excess off as this will prevent the formula from clumping once you apply.
Here are a few tips to avoid clumps:
1. Start With a Clean Face
This sounds rather obvious, does it not? Well, you would be surprised at how different the result could be if you still have traces of makeup from the day before.
2. Always Wiggle Your Wand
Hold the brush at the base of your lashes and wiggle it back forth as you make your way to the tip of the lashes.
3. Know When to Toss Your Mascara
The PAO (period after opening) of mascara begins when you open it, and it is best to toss the old tube and buy a new one after the months defined in the PAO (on the box). Remember not to place the mascara brush on shelves and that it is strictly personal, do not let other people use it!
4. Try Not to Overdo It
When it comes to coats, stick with two as a general limit; anything more will weigh down your lashes and start to give you an unnatural look. Always let the first layer dry for at least 30 seconds before applying another.

Applying mascara to all your lashes, including the so-called outer ones (close to the corner of the eye), is the secret to achieving a harmonious result.
And what about smudging? Fear not, soak a cotton bud in your favourite KIKO make-up remover and use it like you would a rubber, to ‘delete’ smudges without ruining the rest of your make-up.
Choose the right product for you, whether that is a volumizing, lengthening or curling effect mascara, and if you really want to turn heads, add a pair of false lashes.
